Why writing a horrible review makes you a complete twat.

Writing a horrible review makes you a complete twat.

After spending years in the restaurant game, every now and again you come across some of the worst challenges which from time to time include dealing with a horrible malicious review, from someone hiding behind the mobile device.

Why does this make you a twat?

Well the Restaurant game is a very challenging one, restauranteurs do not open a business, work for up to 15 hours a day, working hard to maintain margins, keep hold of over worked staff, dealing with suppliers, paying huge overheads with the intention to provide a terrible experience on purpose!

No, as we are all human every now and again we all have that bad day, where nothing seems to go our way!

Today’s society people jump on restaurant review sites just to write a malicious review, not thinking why or how the restaurant got it so wrong.

Below are three things you can do ‘instead’ of writing a terrible review and maybe get something in return.

Here are some ways to fix the problem before announcing your warm salad to the world.

#1 Ask the waiter

If your not happy with the temperature of your chips or think maybe you need more dressing for that salad, don’t sit there for the next half hour eating through it, then complain to the entire table on how the chips are so cold and pull out your mobile device likes its a 1965 tommy gun!

Ask the waiter at an appropriate time and politely ask for some fresh chips as i think these are too cold, you might just get a fresh bowl with a free drink for the inconvenience.

#2 Wait for the rush to end.

Many reviews are all about the waiting time, yes with the way of the future now everything we want and need is a google search away, what this now means is that we are all spoilt when it comes to waiting. This has flowed into the real world, so when it comes to waiting longer than half an hour for a dish it becomes outrageously in-convenient for the customer who in fairness is in no rush to go anywhere…..

Waiting for the busy rush to end before ordering your bite to eat is a lot more smarter when it comes to narrowing down your waiting time, instead of joining the status quo and having to go to lunch at midday because thats what we are all ‘supposed to do’ arrange for lunch an hour or two later and maybe you might have the complete attention of the staff which means better service and reduce your waiting time by ten to fifteen minutes.

#3 Talk to the manger or owner.

Yes there are some certain terrible experiences that are down to the staff, some larger restaurants do have managers full time which means the owners are not found at the restaurant too often, in return means the staff do tend to be a lot more relaxed, talkative between themselves which will lead to bad customer service and poor focus on the job in hand. This does not mean that you have every right to reach straight for your mobile phone to attack the restaurant with full force, on review apps and sites to put them publicly to shame, which will damage the restaurants business in the long term.

Talking to the manager or owner is my personal last resort when it comes to having a bad experience, Asking for the manger and having a little quiet word regarding how you think the service tonight was terrible is not only honest, but also gives the manager the ability to strike while the irons hot. Some cases the message might not reach the owner, so sometimes asking the manager for the owners email address and writing a good honest letter regarding your experience will be a lot more constructive, either way you could receive a free complimentary round of drinks for the table or even a free meal voucher direct from the owner thanking you for ‘coming to them first’ and for letting him know whats happening at his restaurant while he isn’t there.

So next time you have that bad experience, don’t be a twat.
